Disaster Preparedness
Disaster Mission
Emergency Services:
Each year, the Northwest Alabama
American Red Cross Chapter responds immediately to more than 72
disasters, including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster
responses), hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents,
explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters.
The Good News Is That We Can
Help:
Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting
people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster
threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and
mental health services to address basic human needs. In addition to these
services, the core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to
individuals and families affected by disaster to enable them to resume their
normal daily activities independently. The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers,
handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area,
provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those
affected by disaster to access other available resources.
All Red Cross assistance is given free of
charge, made possible by the generous contribution of people's time, money,
and skills.
Contacting Family in the Disaster Area
If a loved one is in the affected area, family members from outside the area
can call their local Red Cross chapter and request assistance in determining
the well-being of their family member.
How You Can Help
There are many ways you can become involved in Disaster Services or help
your community through the Red Cross.
Giving Your Time and Skills
Start by contacting your local chapter, and ask to speak with someone about
volunteering with Disaster Services. Let your chapter know about your skills
and interests, and they’ll match them with Red Cross disaster activities.
